Transport Research Arena 2018

Europe's largest transport research conference will take place in Vienna from April 16 to April 19, 2018. Urban Innovation Vienna supports the City of Vienna and hosts a session on autonomous driving.

What are the implications of autonomous driving for the future of smart urban mobility? Although numerous innovations are emerging a lot of infrastructural and organisational challenges will lie ahead of us until this kind of mobility will work smoothly in cities. Cities should pay attention to important but still hidden aspects: What impact does autonomous driving have on urbanisation, density, city planning and affordability? How to transform the DNA of private car ownership into a behaviour of collectively used autonomous cars? During the session "Hidden Aspects of Autonomous Driving" hosted by Urban Innovation Vienna the role of autonomous mobility in cities will be discussed with some of the most innovative representatives from the sector. The discussion takes place on April 18 from from noon until 1.15 p.m.

At TRA 2018 (Transport Research Arena), around 3,000 experts from around the world will discuss the latest developments in transport and mobility. The focus will be on the digitalisation and decarbonisation of the transport sector. The main topics such as environment and energy efficiency, rail and ship traffic, alternative propulsion systems, intelligent urban mobility and logistics, human mobility (systems and services) will be dealt with. Freight transport and logistics, transport infrastructure, networked and automated mobility, digital technologies, safe and resilient transport systems and the human dimension in transport, socio-economic, innovation and policy will all be included in the program.

The 100 sessions of TRA 2018 will also cover current topics such as automated driving, zero-emission ship and aviation innovations and intermodal exchanges. The content of TRA revolves around the "big trends" in mobility. The motto of the TRA 2018 is: "A digital era for transport – solutions for society, economy and environment". In total, more than 600 lectures and poster presentations are planned. Several exhibition areas are offered on more than 7,000 square meters, and visitor interaction areas will be set up for the first time with the "Interactive Zone", which invites visitors to actively experience the latest research and developments. Detailed information about Smart City Vienna and mobility is provided by the Smart City Exhibition in the mall area of the conference.

TRA 2018 is supported by the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) together with the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology and AustriaTech and with the support of the European Commission and the European technology platforms ERTRAC (European Road Transport Research Advisory Council), ERRAC (European Rail Research Advisory Council), WATERBORNE, CEDR (Conference of European Directors of Roads), ETRA (European Transport Research Alliance), ALICE (Alliance for Logistics Innovation through Collaboration), ECTP (European Construction Technology Platform), and ACARE (Advisory Council for Aviation Research and Innovation in Europe). The event will take place from April 16 to April 19, 2018 at Reed Messe Wien.
