Mobility in new neighborhoods

Support for environmentally friendly mobility concepts and measures in district planning and realisation.

In order to underline the pursuit of Vienna’s mobility target (increasing environmentally friendly mobility from 73% to 80% by 2025), a hub has been created that oversees the interface between administration, developers and mobility service providers at an early stage of planning and strengthens mobility objectives in neighborhood planning.

 

The degree of motorisation in Vienna has been falling continuously for years. With the Thematic Concept Mobility, the city of Vienna has set itself the target of further reducing motorised private transportation and to focus even more on environmentally friendly modes of mobility. The goal is that by 2025, 80% of all paths will be undertaken using environmentally friendly transport modes.

 

This target is supported by global mobility trends: in addition to the increased use of public transport and improved conditions for pedestrians and cyclists, the topic of "Mobility as a Service" (MaaS) is becoming increasingly important. New mobility services such as (electric) car sharing, rental bikes, cargo bikes, e-charging stations, etc. can be booked via the smart phone using digital apps and be used in a multimodal manner. In new neighborhoods and urban development areas, these new mobility offerings have particular potential. Here you reach people at a time when they can rethink and change their mobility behavior. At the same time, there are good conditions for new mobility service providers (density, car-free areas, collective garages, etc.). In Vienna too, such innovative mobility services are to be increasingly offered in the future.

 

In cooperation with the client, MA 21 District Planning and Land Use, as well as real estate developers and mobility service providers, the aim is to foster the development of mobility services for new areas, – through

  • discussions early in the planning process,
  • advising property developers and developers on the development of mobility concepts,
  • passing on experiences made on mobility in different urban development areas,
  • documentation of mobility measures and trends in cities, including best practice examples;
  • research on legal framework conditions and obstacles to the establishment of mobility measures (mobility contracts, town planning contracts, etc.) as well as on financing possibilities and subsidies,
  • participation in municipal working groups and committees on mobility management, as well as through
  • monitoring and evaluation of mobility measures.
